Behind all the adaptive learning babble, which was highly stimulated by the industry lately, there is more than just technology and science. Yes, it is about personalizing the learning paths according to each learner’s needs. However, its multifarious impacts root so much deeper than we always get to hear. Let me explain…
I am sure that most of us agree if I say that we are all unique and that we all have different strengths and weaknesses. We don´t just look differently, we also think differently.
Most of us have probably made the experience at school: sometimes we were not as good as our classmate or as we would have expected at an exam, even when we did our best. Not only we compare ourselves with others, but teachers and parents also compare children with each other by their grades and achievements.
This causes a lot of stress for the kids to hold up with their classmates. Of course, stress and assessments are situations which we have to learn to deal with. Nevertheless, by being constantly exposed to such a trivial categorizing society, students might fail to build up on their real strengths and to gain self-confidence.
This is not the case with the assistance of adaptive learning. An adaptive learning tool can guide each student to learn according to his knowledge and goals. It guides students on their journey to develop themselves at their own pace.
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its abilities to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”*
In a modern world like ours, everyone should have the chance to show his or her own strengths. If we teach all children the same standardized content at the same time, we might miss to see the individuality and talent behind each one of them. Apart from all the chatter about adaptive learning, we must realize its inherent potential.
