AI in your LMS: integration made easier for an optimal learning experience

Six months ago, Domoscio announced the release of the v3 of its platform. One of the major new features is the possibility to easily and autonomously integrate Domoscio’s artificial intelligence solutions with an existing learning platform. Here is all you need to know about this functionality and the learning experience which you can achieve.

Adaptive learning and reinforcement made possible through SCORM

The third version of Domoscio, implemented in late 2019, has arrived with a rebranding of its products based on artificial intelligence: the adaptive learning solution Domoscio Hub individualizes the learning plans based on skills needs, and the learning reinforcement solution Domoscio Lock drives the long-term retention of the acquired skills. Inside these products, the evolutions have focused on user experience, user interface, reporting… and integration with an existing learning environment.

Because to make AI work, it requires data: on the learners, on the learning material and on the interaction between both. This data already exists in the company’s learning platform, whether it is an LMS, an LEP (Learning Engagement Platform) or an LXP (Learning eXperience Platform).

Therefore, Domoscio integrates with the platform to collect the data which will then be used by the algorithms. How? Through the interoperability standard SCORM, whose significant advantage is to be supported by most platforms. It works as follows: the company’s L&D teams have access to Domoscio authoring tool to…

  • Edit learning objectives and index learning actions, for Domoscio Hub to design adaptive learning experiences
  • Edit notions to retain and create quizzes, for Domoscio Lock to design learning reinforcement experiences

Once this structure is created, the module can be exported in a SCORM format which will be distributed on any learning platform used by the company, whether it is web or mobile.

What user experience to expect?

With regards to the platform administration, L&D teams are autonomous in editing, managing and distributing as many SCORMs as they wish. This also means that they will be able to enroll learners to this SCORM directly in the platform (LMS, LEP or LXP), without using Domoscio.

On their side, learners keep doing what they are used to: they have access to their learning environment from their platform. If they are enrolled in one or several SCORMs related to Domoscio, they can launch the activity. Depending on the solution, the experience is as follows:

  • Domoscio Hub: learners get to Domoscio via an SSO (Single Sign-On) protocol, where they can take an adaptive assessment to evaluate their level of proficiency on the target skills. On their dashboard, they have access to recommendations adapted to their profile and learning needs. To follow a recommended course, they are redirected to the right platform: LMS, micro-learning tool, MOOC platform, serious game, video-sharing platform, etc.
  • Domoscio Lock: learners’ reinforcement path may be integrated to a learning program (face-to-face, digital or blended) or stand alone. When it is triggered, Domoscio computes reminders adapted to everyone’s cognitive profile to send them a notification with a quiz at the right time, through an email or Domoscio mobile application: the latter adds a more gamified channel. When learners have answered reinforcement quizzes, new reminders are computed according to their results to support them in the reinforcement process.

What about xAPI…

Today, SCORM remains a key standard in terms of integration because it is (almost) universal. But there are other interoperability standards to enhance learner experiences and data exchange between learning tools. Domoscio has decided to support the main standards such as LTI (Learning Tool Interoperability) or QTI (Question and Test Interoperability): any platform which supports one or several of these standards can benefit from a simple integration with Domoscio’s solutions.

Finally, when talking about adaptive learning, we often hear the term xAPI. xAPI is a standard related to the format of learning data which enables two learning tools to “communicate in the same language”. An xAPI data is presented with a three-item convention: who (the learner), what (a verb describing the action), on what (the content on which the interaction occurred). For instance: the user A succeeded in the quiz X, the user B spent 30 seconds on the content Y, etc. When using xAPI, we make sure that each activity which takes place on the learning platform can be forwarded (via APIs) to an artificial intelligence system to be analyzed.

Coming back to adaptive learning, the range of possibilities is huge since the more data there is, the faster the algorithms will be to produce powerful outcomes. While the learning market is progressively evolving towards the spread of the xAPI standard, some providers have implemented it and can already benefit from the whole Domoscio functionalities.
